As things became more dire, the offices closed, everyone transitioned to remote work, and Michael and his family left the city and headed for their house in the Hamptons to ride out the pandemic.Īs the weeks turned to months – seven months, in fact – thoughts eventually turned to where the best place would be to not only safeguard the business, but safeguard the employees as well, who Aram says he always considered his extended family. Once the coronavirus began to make its presence known up and down the East Coast in early 2020, Michael Aram’s New York team, working out of their corporate offices in Chelsea, was understandably hesitant using public transportation or commuting in and out of the city. It’s a small moment, one of many small moments, that gently illustrates how much life has changed for the eponymous designer over the last two years. “Or,”he laughs, “maybe I should just fill a Michael Aram bowl with candy, put it out on the steps and call it a day.” He trails off and is lost in thought for a moment. “Do I put this outside,” he muses, “or is the humidity going to make it disintegrate? Things you don’t have to think about in the West Village….” It’s mid-October, and Michael Aram is carving a pumpkin for his children for Halloween.
